Melamine also goes by the names Melamine Faced Chipboard (MFC), Thermally Fused Melamine (TFM), Thermally Fused Laminate (TFL) and Low Pressure Laminate (LPL). It is made by fusing a resin-impregnated sheet of décor paper directly to a panel substrate. Heat and pressure activate the resin in the saturated paper sheet, creating a cross-linked bond with the substrate, effectively sealing the substrate. Particleboard is the ideal substrate for melamine because it is dimensionally consistent, uniform in strength, low cost and free of surface defects. MDF is also a suitable substrate in certain specialty applications. Melamine is available in solid colors or printed wood, stone and abstract patterns with various surface textures, including gloss.
